How do I get my car back after it is impounded for a DUI?
In Connecticut, when you are stopped for a DUI, your car will be towed to a local tow company junkyard, but not junked. It probably will not be searched, either, because by then the cops will have had ample opportunity to search it. They are allowed to do that under the law. You do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy in your vehicle. You do not need to worry about the cops wanting to keep your vehicle unless they found drugs in that vehicle or other evidence of wrongdoing on your part.
If it’s your standard DUI stop that you get in Connecticut, for the most part, all you have to do is pay the people that stored your car for you for however many days it took you to go back and get it. If it is not drivable, it becomes a little bit more complicated and you might need a court order to get your vehicle back. That is at the discretion of the police department.
